Endodontists are dentists, but only three percent of dentists have undergone additional training to become endodontists. This consists of three years of education and residencies taking place after graduating from dental school. This training focuses on diagnosing tooth pain and performing root canals and other challenging procedures that conditions of the interior of the tooth. Because their work preserves teeth that would otherwise be pulled, endodontists are known as specialists in saving teeth.
